SWAN'S ISLAND LOBSTER AND MARINE MUSEUM
The Riches of the Sea
Lobster, mackerel and cod are not the only riches in the sea. Island fishermen built ingenious weirs to trap herring and sardines, for bait and for canning. You can see models and photographs of these huge fish traps, which were in regular use up until about the 1930s. You can also see the equipment used for another fish product - cod liver oil. Cod livers were processed to render out the extremely strong-tasting oil which was used as a dietary supplement and general tonic. Old timers who were dosed with cod liver oil as children will have a vivid memory of the taste.
