Lobsters Take Over

Home The Fighting Fishermen The Racing Schooners Boatbuilding Lobsters Take Over The Riches of the Sea

Fishing for mackerel and codfish kept the fisheries rolling along in the 1800s, but by the early 1900s the days of the racing schooners were over. Fortunately, by this time the American public had developed a taste for lobster. Islanders adapted quickly to this new fishery and built boats of many different designs for lobster fishing - sailboats at first and later on, power boats.
